Looking for a Free Walking Tour in Alghero? Walk This Self-Guided Route Instead

Alghero doesn't run a classic daily free walking tour through its old town, but the historic center is compact enough that a self-guided route covers the same ground — the fortification towers, the seafront, the old market — at your own pace and for free.

Start where the city's defenses once stood. The Torre de la Polveriera is a good first stop: tucked into the walls facing the Bastioni Pigafetta, this tower once served as a gunpowder magazine, a function as dangerous as it sounds for a structure built into the city's own defenses. From here you already get a sense of how tightly the old town is wrapped in its Catalan-Aragonese fortifications.

Keep following the walls toward the water and you reach the Torre di Sant'Elmo, where the view opens up over the harbor and the sea beyond. This is the kind of stop a guided tour would linger on, except here you can stay as long as you like. Boats come and go below, and the tower itself is a reminder that Alghero's defenses were built to watch the water as much as the land.

From the seafront, cut back into the old town toward the Monumento ai Caduti, known locally in Catalan as the Monument als Caiguts — a war memorial honoring the city's fallen. It's a quieter stop, but it's worth the pause: Alghero's identity runs through both languages, Italian and Algherese Catalan, and this is one of the places where that dual heritage is written into stone.

End the loop at the Mercato Civico, Alghero's covered market. This isn't a tourist stop dressed up for visitors — it's where the city actually shops. Expect stalls built around fresh fish and seafood, alongside local Sardinian cheeses and cured meats, and vendors who switch easily between Italian and Algherese Catalan depending on who they're serving.

What you get by stringing these four stops together on foot is essentially what a free walking tour would give you — towers, sea views, a memorial, a market — minus the fixed schedule and the group pace. The self-guided route through Alghero's old town connects exactly these points, so if a free walking tour isn't running when you're in town, this is the version that's always available.
