The Royal Heart of Aranjuez

The core of Aranjuez is formed by the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, a masterpiece that offered the Spanish royal family an idyllic retreat. Its facade, with red brick and white stone accents, bears witness to centuries of history. This palace is not just a building; it's a place where the grandeur of the Spanish court becomes tangible.

Directly in front of the palace unfolds the Jardín del Parterre, a garden that breathes the French Baroque style. Here you'll find perfectly symmetrical beds, fountains, and sculptures, with the impressive 'Fuente de Hércules' at its center. It's a spectacle of order and beauty that reflects the royal grandeur of yesteryear. Not far from here stands the elegant Fuente de la Mariblanca, an icon of Aranjuez. This beautiful fountain, with its graceful sculpture of the goddess Venus, owes its name to the white marble figure that shines in the sunlight.

The history of Aranjuez extends beyond just the palace. In the immediate vicinity, you'll find buildings that reflect the city's rich history, such as the Medinaceli Palace. This stately building was once owned by the powerful Dukes of Medinaceli and tells stories of nobility and influence, visible in the coats of arms above the entrance. The Casa de Santiago de los Caballeros, the former residence of the knights of the Order of Santiago, one of Spain's most important military orders, also testifies to an era of religious and military power.

Waterways and Lush Islands

The presence of the Tagus River is inextricably linked to the identity of Aranjuez and its gardens. The Jardín de la Isla, an oasis of peace and beauty, is laid out on an artificial island, surrounded by the waters of the Tagus. This garden combines Renaissance and Baroque influences and invites you to wander along shady paths past many fountains and sculptures, including the 'Fuente de Hércules y Anteo'.

Deeper in the gardens, you'll find the Cascada de las Castañuelas, the 'Castanet Waterfall'. This charming waterfall, with its cascading water features, is a hidden gem. The gentle rustling of the falling water is reminiscent of the rhythmic tapping of castanets, which explains its name. It's a peaceful spot, perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle.

A glimpse into daily life at court is offered by the Antiguas Cocheras de la Reina Madre, the old coach houses. Here, the royal carriages and horses of the Queen Mother once stood. Although the carriages and horses have long since disappeared, you can almost hear the echoes of their presence, providing a fascinating glimpse into former court life.

The Grandeur of the Prince's Gardens

Besides this grandeur, the Isabel II Garden offers a smaller, intimate green space, a tribute to Queen Isabella II, perfect for a moment of tranquility.
