In the Footsteps of Saints

Our exploration of Assisi begins at one of its most iconic sites: the Papal Basilica and Sacred Convent of Saint Francis in Assisi. This architectural marvel, a double basilica, is the resting place of Saint Francis. Inside, the walls are adorned with frescoes by Giotto and Cimabue, depicting his life in vivid detail. It's a place where art, faith, and history merge into a deeply moving experience. From here, our route leads us to the Porta San Francesco, an imposing entrance that has welcomed travelers and pilgrims for centuries. This gate marks the boundary between the sacred city and the world beyond, its robust stone walls bearing the stories of countless passersby.

Further into the city, we find the Chiesa di San Pietro, an example of Romanesque architecture that has stood for centuries. The simplicity and strength of its stone walls, along with its beautiful portals and subtle details, make this church special. The silence within invites reflection.

Another highlight of spiritual significance is the Basilica of Saint Clare, recognizable by its pink and white facade. Inside rests Saint Clare, the faithful follower of Saint Francis. Here, the original cross that spoke to Francis is also preserved, a place of deep devotion and a testament to faith.

The Cathedral of San Rufino, Assisi's mother church, is a pinnacle of Romanesque art. Its facade is impressive, adorned with intricate sculptures and three rose windows. Inside is the baptismal font where both Francis and Clare were baptized, a place of profound historical significance. Nearby, in the Assisi Diocesan Museum, you can delve deeper into Assisi's religious art and history. This museum, located next to the cathedral, houses works spanning centuries, including the baptismal font that forms a tangible link to the founders of the Franciscan order.

A Journey Through Time: From Romans to the Middle Ages

Assisi's history extends beyond its medieval saints. A walk through the city also reveals remnants of its Roman past. An interesting stop is the Portico of Monte Frumentario. What once began as a medieval grain warehouse later transformed into a hospital and now serves as a cultural center. The loggia with its arches invites you to pause and absorb Assisi's layered history.

Beneath the bustle of modern Assisi lies a hidden world: the Roman Forum and Archaeological Museum. Here, you travel thousands of years back in time to the beating heart of the Roman city. The remains of temples, shops, and public buildings reveal the daily life of the Romans. Above ground, in the Piazza del Comune, Roman past and medieval grandeur converge. This vibrant square is surrounded by magnificent buildings, including the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Assisi, which showcases a perfectly preserved Roman temple front, transformed into a Christian church, with impressive columns. The Torre del Popolo also contributes to the square's unique atmosphere.

High above the city, like a crown on the hilltop, stands the Rocca Maggiore. This imposing medieval fortress offers panoramic views over the entire valley. From here, you can imagine how soldiers guarded the city for centuries, and the fortress tells tales of power, struggle, and resilience. In a quieter spot, we find the Rocca Minore, the 'small' fortress. Although less known than its larger sibling, this fortress played a crucial role in the city's defense. The remains of its walls and towers whisper stories of ancient times and strategic battles.
