Corfu's Fortifications

The history of Corfu Town is inextricably linked to its strategic location, which led to the construction of impressive fortifications. The Old Fortress, situated on a rocky peninsula, has been Corfu's protector for centuries. This military structure, built by the Venetians, still displays the Lion of St. Mark, a silent witness to its rich past. Within the walls of this fortress is the Sea Tower, a crucial part of the defense against danger from the Ionian Sea. From here, guards scanned the horizon for centuries. High above the waves also stands the lighthouse of the Old Fortress, which has safely guided sailors through the waters of the Ionian Sea, a beacon of safety.

Not far away, the New Fortress dominates Corfu's skyline. This Venetian military structure, with its complex network of bastions and underground passages, is a testament to Corfu's strategic importance and resilience throughout the centuries. These fortresses are not only historical monuments but also places that illustrate the island's enduring spirit.

Spianada: The Heart of the City

Central to Corfu Town lies the Spianada, one of Europe's largest squares. This expansive field, once a strategic defensive line, is now a vibrant meeting place. Here, locals play cricket and visitors stroll, showcasing Corfu's unique blend of Venetian, French, and British influences. On the edge of the Spianada stands the Corfu Clock Tower, which has marked the city's rhythm for centuries and offers views over the old town and the harbor.

The Spianada also features monuments marking the British presence on the island. The Maitland Monument is a neoclassical rotunda, a tribute to Sir Thomas Maitland, the first British High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands. Nearby stands the Douglas Obelisk, a commemorative column erected in honor of Sir Howard Douglas, also reflecting neoclassical influence and a bygone era. The Palace of St. Michael and St. George, flanking the Spianada, houses the Museum of Asian Art, a collection of Asian art gathered by collectors, bridging cultures in the heart of the Ionian Sea.

Art and Ancient Tales

Corfu Town is also a treasure trove for art and history enthusiasts. The Byzantine Museum of Antivouniotissa, housed in the former church of Panagia Antivouniotissa, displays a collection of Byzantine icons and religious artifacts. This place exudes history and spirituality, offering a window into Corfu's spiritual heritage.

For a deeper dive into antiquity, there is the Archaeological Museum of Corfu. This museum unveils the island's rich history, from prehistory to Roman times. Its most famous centerpiece is the Gorgon pediment from the Temple of Artemis, a masterpiece from antiquity that showcases the power of Greek mythology.
