Also known as: जोधपुर

Deep in Rajasthan's Thar Desert lies Jodhpur, a city known as the 'Blue City'. Its houses, painted in a striking indigo hue, create an enchanting panorama visible from afar. But Jodhpur is more than just a color; it's a living museum of history, royal grandeur, and vibrant life. A city walk through Jodhpur takes you on a journey through ancient forts, lively markets, and architectural wonders, where every stone seems to whisper a story.
The Impregnable Heights of Mehrangarh Fort
Our exploration begins at Mehrangarh Fort, a colossal fortress that perches like an eagle above Jodhpur. Its walls rise up to 36 meters from the rocks, an impressive feat of medieval architecture. Within the fort walls, a world of opulence and history unfolds. One of the most lavish halls is Phool Mahal, the 'Flower Palace', where maharajas held private audiences. The ceiling is an explosion of gold and intricate mirror mosaics, a testament to the wealth of yesteryear. A little further lies Moti Mahal, the 'Pearl Palace', the throne room where important decisions were made. Its pearly white plaster walls once gleamed like gemstones, and the five niches mark the spots where the king and his ministers sat. Sheesh Mahal, the 'Mirror Palace', is an enchanting room completely covered with millions of tiny mirror pieces that catch and reflect the light, creating a kaleidoscopic effect. The fort also boasts its defenses and gates. Jai Pol, the 'Victory Gate', was built by Maharaja Man Singh to celebrate his victories over the Jaipur and Bikaner armies. Its massive wooden doors are studded with iron spikes, a silent witness to past conflicts. The main entrance, Loha Pol, is a monument of courage and sacrifice. Here, one can see the red handprints of the 'Sati' imprints of Maharaja Man Singh's widows, a powerful symbol of devotion. From a special viewpoint within the fort, Jodhpur stretches out like a blue blanket under the golden glow of the setting sun, a moment where the grandeur of nature and the city converge.

The Beating Heart and Ancient Waterways
After the fort, we descend into the city's vibrant heart. Sardar Market buzzes with life, from the scent of spices and sweets to the vivid colors of textiles and handicrafts. The iconic clock tower watches over the market, and the sounds of bargaining and laughter fill the air. This clock tower, Ghanta Ghar, is a majestic structure that not only tells time but also serves as a beacon marking the hustle and bustle of Sardar Market. Built by Maharaja Sardar Singh, it is a symbol of the city's progress and heritage. Near the market, we find Toorji Ka Jhalra, a historic stepwell. This ingenious system of steps descends to the groundwater and was built to quench the city's thirst. The intricate carvings and the symmetry of the construction are a testament to ancient engineering and craftsmanship.
A Tribute to Heritage and Leadership
Jodhpur honors its founders and leaders in various places. A statue of Rao Jodha Ji, the founder of Jodhpur and the builder of Mehrangarh Fort, stands with his gaze fixed on the fort, a lasting reminder of his legacy. Another important monument is Jaswant Thada, often called the 'Taj Mahal of Marwar'. This serene marble cenotaph is a tribute to Maharaja Jaswant Singh II and his successors. The fine, sculpted marble slabs are so thin that they glow in sunlight, giving the place a delicate beauty and inviting reflection.
