Where East Meets West: The Historic Heart

Your journey through Pécs inevitably begins in Széchenyi Square, the city's beating heart. Here, you feel history beneath your feet, with layers of Roman, Ottoman, and Hungarian influences forming the very ground. In the center of this square stands the impressive Mosque-Church of Pasha Qasim, a building that embodies Pécs' complex history. Once the city's largest mosque, built by Pasha Qasim, it was later transformed into a Catholic church. Yet, inside, you can still see the mihrab, the prayer niche pointing towards Mecca – tangible proof of this city's cultural melting pot.

Not far from here, you'll find the Janus Pannonius Museum, a treasure trove of history and art, named after the famous Renaissance poet and Bishop of Pécs. Inside lie Roman artifacts and medieval art, uncovering the rich layers of the region and taking you on a journey through time. The city breathes history, and this becomes even clearer at the Basilica of Pécs. This brick cathedral towers over the city like a fortress. For centuries, monks painted the vault with a sky full of stars and saints, resulting in Europe's largest painted interior. Next to the majestic Basilica stands the elegant Bishop's Palace, the residence of the Bishop of Pécs, a place where power and faith have converged for centuries.

Pécs: A Canvas of Art and Innovation

Pécs is not only rich in history but also a breeding ground for art and innovation. One of the most striking places is the Victor Vasarely Museum, a tribute to the visionary artist who created the world of Op-Art. His work is a feast for the eyes, full of movement and optical illusions that challenge your brain. The building itself, with its clean lines, reflects the precision of his art.

Further into the city, you'll discover the Ferenc Martyn Museum, dedicated to one of Hungary's most intriguing modernists. Martyn's work bridges the gap between the figurative and the abstract, often with a playful, almost surreal touch. His influence on Hungarian art is undeniable. Another indispensable stop for art lovers is the Csontváry Museum, a place that takes you into the visionary world of Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka, one of Hungary's most original painters. His works, full of vibrant colors and mystical landscapes, are so unique that he is often called a 'solitary prophet'.

The dynamic world of 20th-century Hungarian art comes to life in the Modern Hungarian Gallery, housed in a part of the historic Barbican complex. Here, you'll see how Hungarian artists responded to the great changes of their time, from early avant-garde to contemporary works. And then there's the Zsolnay Fountain, sparkling in Széchenyi Square. It shimmers in the sunlight thanks to the famous eosin glaze, a mysterious technique that made the Zsolnay factory in Pécs world-renowned. Its iridescent colors seem to change with every glance. A tribute to the man behind this innovation can be found in the statue of Vilmos Zsolnay, whose vision and innovation put Pécs on the world map with his unique ceramics and embraced the Art Nouveau movement.
