What do you do in Roskilde with kids, when museums alone aren't enough? You turn the way there into a game. The CityWalkGems walking tour turns Roskilde into a route with riddles — and suddenly the stretch of walking between two stops isn't a walk any more, it's the next task.
Why it works with children
At each of the 12 stops there's a short story and a riddle to solve together. Kids have something to do instead of trailing behind, and adults still catch the history. You play straight in the browser, with no download or account, and Roskilde is free to play.
Stops kids enjoy
Roskilde Oplevelseshavn is the obvious favourite: a lively harbour with wooden boats, kayaks, the smell of salt water and gulls overhead — a place where you're allowed to just stop and look. Stændertorvet gives the route its centre: a wide square to catch your breath, with centuries of market history underfoot.
Roskilde Cathedral tends to impress children less through its building history than through its sheer height and the painted vault full of stars. And the Roskilde Museum, housed in an old manor, tells the town's story through objects you can look at — for many children, more tangible than a date.
Honestly: the route is no gentle stroll
5.0 kilometres and two to two and a half hours is a lot for smaller children. With a four-year-old we wouldn't walk the route in one go — better to split it, take a long break at the harbour, or stop halfway and come back the next day. The route isn't going anywhere. A pushchair will manage the cobbles, but comfortable it is not.
Plan it that way and you'll have a genuinely good day in Roskilde with kids — Viking ships, royal graves and the fjord at your back included. Start the route in the CityWalkGems app.
