Our exploration begins in the monumental Grand Square (Piața Mare), which for centuries was Sibiu's epicenter. Here you breathe in history; it was the place where bustling markets were held and important proclamations were made. Look up at the colorful facades that whisper stories of wealthy merchants and proud guilds. From here, one of Sibiu's most distinctive architectural details immediately stands out: the 'Sibiu eyes' in the roofs. These ventilation openings give the houses, such as the beautiful Hecht House, their unique character and the feeling as if the city is watching you.
An absolute must-see on the square is the "Brukenthal" National Museum. This palace, once the residence of Baron Samuel von Brukenthal, housed his impressive art collections. It opened its doors to the public as early as 1817, making it one of the first museums in the world. Nearby is the Altemberger House, now the History Museum, which brings the history of Transylvania to life. This imposing building began as a fortified residence and grew into the city hall, witnessing centuries of urban administration and important decisions. Also pause at the statue of Bishop Georg Daniel Teutsch. From the Upper Town, we descend to one of Sibiu's most legendary places: the Bridge of Lies. It is said that the bridge creaks and trembles if someone tells a lie on it. This beautiful park, laid out in the 19th century, was one of the first public parks in Sibiu and is the perfect place to catch your breath in a serene atmosphere.
Fortifications and Cultural Echoes
Sibiu's history as a fortified city is still tangible. The Thick Tower (Turnul Gros), now a majestic concert hall (Thalia Hall), was once an impregnable fortress and one of the city's largest defensive towers. The impressive remains of the medieval fortifications can also be found in Citadel Park.
