The Beating Heart: Squares and Palaces

Your walk through Sibiu inevitably begins in Piața Mare, the expansive Great Square. For centuries, this was the scene of markets, festivals, and even public executions. What immediately stands out are the roofs with their iconic 'eyes' that seem to oversee the city – an architectural feature you won't find anywhere else. From this square, you step directly into the world of Baron Samuel von Brukenthal. His vision led to one of Europe's first museums, now the Brukenthal National Museum, housed in a magnificent palace with a collection of art and artifacts. Nearby stands the Altemberger House, a 15th-century Gothic masterpiece, which now houses the History Museum. The old stone walls and the details of the facade reflect the city's rich history. From the grandeur of Piața Mare, you walk on to Piața Mică, the charming Small Square. This square, with its colorful houses and cozy cafes, was once the center of artisan trade. Here too, you'll find the famous 'eyes' on the roofs that follow you everywhere. The Council Tower, Sibiu's iconic symbol, connects Piața Mare and Piața Mică. Throughout the centuries, this tower has served as a grain storage, prison, and lookout tower. From the top, the tower offers a panoramic view of the city and the surrounding mountains, while its clock has been telling time for Sibiu's inhabitants for centuries.

A City of Stories: From Defense to Culture

Sibiu's history as a fortified city is palpable everywhere. The enchanting Stairs Passage, a medieval jewel, connects the Upper Town with the Lower Town. This picturesque passage, with its two staircases and series of arches, was once a crucial part of Sibiu's first defensive belt. Another remarkable structure is the Bridge of Lies, Romania's first cast-iron bridge, built in 1859. This elegant bridge is surrounded by legends, which whisper that the bridge creaks and groans if someone tells a lie on it. Further on stands the imposing Turnul Gros, the Thick Tower, a remnant of Sibiu's third defensive belt. What was once a robust fortress is now the beautiful Thalia Hall, home to the Sibiu State Philharmonic. Its thick walls bear witness to its military past, while inside, the most beautiful melodies resonate. The remains of Sibiu's mighty fortifications can also be seen in Citadel Park, a green lung with impressive towers and walls. In addition to these historical defenses, Sibiu also offers space for knowledge and relaxation. The Natural History Museum, originally a school, was transformed into a museum in 1895 and now houses collections of flora, fauna, and geology. For a moment of peace, you can visit Astra Park, a green oasis dotted with statues of Romanian thinkers and artists. This park was the site of Sibiu's first zoo in 1858, a hidden history in a beautiful setting.
