The Timeless Charm of Zug's Old Town

Your journey through Zug often begins with a dive into the past, where history is tangible. The Zytturm, with its imposing clock and astronomical dial, is the city's most iconic symbol. Originally a gate, it was raised in the 16th century and equipped with its impressive time display. It is a living piece of history that has withstood the centuries.

Not far from there, Burg Zug towers, a majestic structure dating back to the 13th century. This medieval fortress served as a residence for the lords of Zug and later as the seat of local government. Today, it houses a fascinating museum that illuminates the history of the region.

The robust Pulverturm, a round tower with thick walls, stands as a silent witness to Zug's defensive history. Once part of the medieval city wall, this tower later served as a gunpowder storage, which explains its name.

For an even deeper dive into the past, the Museum of Prehistory takes you on a journey through time, far beyond written history. Here you discover the fascinating world of the region's earliest inhabitants, with finds dating from the Stone Age to the Iron Age, a window into a forgotten past.

A lighter, but equally historical note can be found at the Greth Schell Brunnen. This statue tells one of Zug's most beloved legends: Greth Schell, a woman carrying her drunken husband home in a basket on her back. It is a humorous reminder of the determination of Zug's women and a fixed part of the carnival here.

Along the Shore: Art, Nature, and Panoramas

Lake Zug (Zugersee) is the city's lifeline, and along its shores, a completely different aspect of Zug unfolds, where art and nature go hand in hand. On the shore floats Roman Signer's 'Seesicht' from 2015, a subtle, poetic installation that invites you to pause and reflect on the transience and constant movement of nature.

Further along Seestrasse, you'll encounter 'The Cat', a charming cat sculpture by Swiss artist Robert Indermaur. This beloved artwork invites interaction and is a popular photo spot, adding a playful touch to the lakeside promenade.

The Alpenquai stretches along the shore, offering a magnificent view of the lake and the mountains. This promenade has been a beloved spot for walks and relaxation for over a century. The elegant architecture of the surrounding buildings recalls the glorious era of the Belle Époque.

For a truly impressive vista, the Guggi viewpoint (Aussichtspunkt Guggi) is an absolute must. From here, a panorama unfolds over the shimmering Lake Zug, the historic old town, and the majestic Alps in the background. It's a perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle and absorb the beauty of nature.

Your exploration along the water concludes fittingly with Thomas Schütte's 'Hütte', an intriguing artwork that invites contemplation. This sculptural hut, created between 2016 and 2021, stands as a beacon of modern art in public space, combining functionality with aesthetics.

Zug Today: A City in Motion

Besides its historic core and serene lakeside, Zug also presents itself as a dynamic, modern city. Bundesplatz, a central square, is surrounded by important government buildings. The monument here commemorates crucial moments in Swiss history and the formation of the federal state, a place for reflection on the democratic values that characterize the country.

Zug train station is a modern hub connecting the city with the rest of Switzerland and beyond. It is not only a functional building but also an important part of urban development, with architecture reflecting the region's dynamism – a gateway to the world.
