Welcome to Coburg, a city in the heart of Germany that takes you on a journey through centuries of history, royal grandeur, and surprising discoveries. This city, rich in heritage and surrounded by beautiful landscapes, offers a unique blend of imposing fortresses and charming old streets. Coburg is not a city that screams for attention, but whispers stories to those willing to listen. Let's explore the highlights of this fascinating place together.

The Franconian Crown: Veste Coburg

Our exploration begins with a gaze upwards at the Veste Coburg, which rests like a crown upon the city. This impressive fortress, also known as the 'Franconian Crown', is one of Germany's largest and best-preserved castles. It once housed Martin Luther and today contains magnificent art collections that reflect the region's rich history. The walls of the Veste breathe a deep sense of the past, where stories from bygone eras come to life.

The access to the Veste is marked by the imposing Burgtor and the surrounding Burgmauer. This massive gate and the robust walls have witnessed countless events over the centuries, from royal visits to sieges. The height and scale of the stones make you feel as if you're stepping into another time, inviting you to imagine what life within this fortress once was like. Once inside the walls, you can delve into the treasure chambers of the Veste Coburg, where tales of knights and princesses begin.

One of the most fascinating parts of the Veste is the Bärenbastei. This bastion, with its unique shape, once served as a formidable defensive point. It is named after the bears that were kept in the moat here – an unexpected detail that makes the fortress's history even more vivid. Within the fortress walls, you'll also find the Naturkundemuseum Coburg, an oasis of natural history. Here you'll discover the secrets of life on Earth, from prehistoric fossils to today's splendid biodiversity, including impressive dinosaur bones that transport you back in time.

It's a modern addition to Coburg's historic surroundings, inviting contemplation and a different perspective on the city.

The beating heart of Coburg is the Schlossplatz. This square is surrounded by impressive buildings and is often the scene of lively events and markets. The grandeur and bustle of this historic square are immediately palpable. One of the most prominent buildings here is Ehrenburg Palace, a former residence of the Dukes of Coburg. This palace, with its beautiful facade and opulent interiors, has hosted famous guests, including Queen Victoria. It's remarkable to consider that a figure of her stature stayed here, emphasizing the palace's royal allure.

Also on Schlossplatz stands the imposing equestrian statue of Duke Ernst II, a tribute to an important figure in Coburg's history. Ernst II was not only a ruler but also a composer and a champion of progress. The statue exudes a strength and dignity that captures the presence of a true leader and reflects the spirit of an era.
