Loket: Where the Ohře River Embraces Time

An Impregnable Fortress by the River

The fortifications of Loket are immediately visible and form an essential part of the town. The mighty town walls, known as the Městské opevnění, follow the natural bend of the Ohře River and were crucial for defense. They protected not only the strategic location of the castle but also the flourishing settlement that developed beneath it. These walls were not built all at once but have been constantly adapted and reinforced over the centuries, a silent witness to the strategic value of this place. The different architectural styles that converge in the walls tell a story of continuous adaptation and resilience. It's easy to imagine how people once lived here, safe behind these imposing structures.

Panoramic Views and Poetic Inspiration

Loket is a town of views, and the Ohře River plays a leading role in this. From various viewpoints, a panorama unfolds where the river winds like a snake around Loket's rocky hill, with the castle crowning its summit. One of these places is the Goetheova Vyhlídka, a viewpoint that deeply inspired Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. He visited Loket no fewer than nine times and was deeply impressed by the dramatic location of the castle above the Ohře River, a place where he even wrote poems.

Other viewpoints, such as the Vyhlídkové místo and the View point of Loket, show the town as a jewel embraced by the river, with the castle proudly towering above the rooftops and the river forming a natural moat. The town's unique location on a peninsula is perfectly visible here. There is also a serene vyhlídka where you experience the town in a different way – the distant sound of the Ohře River gently flowing, or the chirping of birds in the trees. The most iconic view, found at the Aussichtspunkt Loket, Hrad Loket & Bridge, shows the majestic castle towering like an unyielding guardian above the river, with the iconic bridge connecting the banks. This castle, once a royal fortress and even a prison for Charles IV, tells tales of centuries-old power and intrigue.

The Beating Heart and the Castle's Stories

Náměstí T. G. Masaryka forms the vibrant heart of Loket. This central square has been the town's beating center for centuries, where markets were held, festivals celebrated, and important decisions made. In the middle stands a Baroque plague column, a tribute to the survivors of the plague. The atmosphere here is authentic, and history is palpable beneath your feet.

Above the town, the imposing Black Tower (Černá věž) stands guard, part of the castle complex. This tower has served as both a strategic lookout post and a prison. The tower's walls, if they could speak, would undoubtedly tell many stories of mystery and history. The castle itself, with its rich past as a royal fortress and even as a prison for Charles IV, is a central point in Loket's history and contributes to the town's deep historical layers.
