One day in Delft: from the Markt to the Oostpoort

Delft is the perfect city for a day trip: compact enough to do everything on foot, rich enough to keep you busy from morning to evening. Here is a logical route through the city — unhurried, with room for terraces.

Morning: the big sights

Start at the Markt, one of Europe's largest and most beautiful historic squares, flanked by the City Hall and the Nieuwe Kerk. If your legs are up to it, climb the 376 steps of the church tower (108 metres, the second-highest in the Netherlands) — on a clear day the view reaches Rotterdam and The Hague. Vermeer lovers then head to the Vermeer Centrum, on the historic site of the Guild of Saint Luke, to discover how the master of light built his illusions.

In between: lunch on a square

The Beestenmarkt is Delft's living room: an atmospheric square beneath 24 giant plane trees, where the weekly cattle market mooed until 1972. The terraces on the Markt make an equally good base.

Afternoon: canals, courtyards and the best photo of the day

After lunch, stroll along the Koornmarkt, called the most picturesque canal in the city by many, with its richly decorated (and sometimes deceptively crooked) patrician houses. Then dive into the quiet: the medieval Bagijnhof with its hidden clandestine church, and the Stille Putten, one of Delft's best-kept secrets. Walk on to the Oostpoort, the last surviving city gate from around 1400 — its reflection in the water is the photo of your day. Still got energy? At Royal Delft you can watch master painters apply the famous blue by hand, and Molen de Roos is the last surviving city windmill.

Turn your day into a story

You can tick these places off a list — or let the city itself run the programme. The interactive CityWalkGems walk (about 4.5 kilometres, roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours) connects the highlights and the hidden corners with puzzles and stories, right in your browser, no download or account needed. The first stops are free to try; the full walk is paid. And just like that, your day in Delft becomes a treasure hunt.
