What do you do with kids in a city cradled by mountains? You head outside. Innsbruck is compact, colourful and full of stories that appeal to children: golden roofs, an old tower and statues with a past. On foot you discover the city at a child's pace, with plenty to point at and talk about.
Discovering Innsbruck with kids on foot
You play the whole route as a game on your phone: each stop comes with a story and a puzzle you solve on the spot. That turns a city walk into a mission, which often works better with children than an ordinary guided tour. You set your own pace and pause whenever it suits.
Stops kids enjoy
A few places instantly appeal to young explorers. The Golden Roof glitters with nearly 2,700 gilded shingles — easy to spot and fun to count with your eyes. The Stadtturm has towered over the city for more than 600 years and once even served as a prison. The Triumphal Arch from 1765 tells a happy story on one side and a sad one on the other, and the Tyrolean Folk Art Museum, set in an old monastery, displays costumes, masks and nativity scenes.
Honest about the distance
The route is about 3.7 kilometres. For older children that is easily manageable; with little ones or a pushchair, simply plan a longer break, for instance in the Innsbrucker Hofgarten, where old trees and paths give room to run around. Allow around 1 to 2 hours, longer if you stop often.
Practical for families
You open the walk in your browser, without a download or account, and start at the Golden Roof. All you need is a phone, and the tour is free to play. Start the adventure in the CityWalkGems app and let the kids discover Innsbruck for themselves.
