Innsbruck is perfect for a day out: compact enough to explore on foot, rich enough to fill a full day. Between imperial history and the mountains that appear at every turn, you walk from the Altstadt down to the Inn and back. This itinerary follows the day from morning to afternoon.
Morning: the imperial heart
Start your day in the enchanting Altstadt Innsbruck, with its colourful medieval houses and ornate facades. Pause at the Golden Roof, Emperor Maximilian's loggia with nearly 2,700 gilded shingles, and continue to the Baroque Dom St. Jakob, where frescoes and Lucas Cranach's painting 'Maria Hilf' set the mood. The morning slips by among these stories.
Afternoon: along the Inn
After lunch — plenty of spots in the centre — you walk towards the river. The Rudolfsbrunnen, with its statue of Archduke Rudolf IV, recalls the figure who shaped Tyrol in the 14th century. Further on you look out over the iconic Colourful Houses of Innsbruck, a row of pastel facades against the Nordkette mountains. Round off in the Innsbrucker Hofgarten, a green oasis once a royal garden, with old trees and a charming bandstand.
Practical for your day
The route is about 3.7 kilometres and counts roughly a dozen stops; the walk itself takes around 1 to 2 hours, but with breaks, a museum visit and lunch it easily fills a day. You open the route in your browser, without a download or account, and start at the Golden Roof.
Getting more out of it
At each stop you read the story of the place and solve a puzzle — a fun way to look more closely. All you need is a phone, and the tour is free to play. Start your day in Innsbruck in the CityWalkGems app and let the city unfold slowly.
