Many of the finest spots in Inverness cost nothing. The streets, the castle hill and the banks of the River Ness belong to everyone — and the walk itself is free to play. On foot you see the capital of the Highlands at its best.
The walk is free to play
You open the route in your browser, with no download or account, and play the twelve-stop tour for free. Along the way you read the story at each place and solve a puzzle — a free way to really get to know Inverness.
What you can enjoy for free
Much of the route plays out in the open and costs nothing. The castle hill by The Inverness Castle Experience offers a sweeping view over the city and the river. Under the glass roof of The Victorian Market you can wander freely among the stalls. The red towers of the Inverness Cathedral, dedicated to St Andrew, and the stately facades along the water are yours to admire from outside. The riverside walk along the Ness, with its bridges and views, is free too.
Honest: what does cost admission
If you want to look inside, you'll pay for entry. That applies to the interactive exhibitions at The Inverness Castle Experience and to the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery if you go in. The buildings and their surroundings are free to admire; only going inside costs money.
Practical
The route is about 4.6 kilometres and takes roughly one and a half to two and a half hours. All you need is a phone, and you start at The Inverness Castle Experience.
That's how you discover Inverness without reaching for your wallet. Start the free walk in the CityWalkGems app and let the city tell its stories.
