One day is enough to get a taste of Inverness — from the castle hill to the lively market and along the banks of the River Ness. This route strings the highlights together into a logical day on foot, and the tour is free to play.
Morning: the castle hill and the city
Start at The Inverness Castle Experience on Castle Hill, where interactive stories and a sweeping view over the city set you on your way. Then descend to the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, where a proud stag's head greets you above the door and Pictish stones sit beside modern art. It gives you an early feel for the history of the Highlands.
Lunch
Around The Victorian Market, with its glass roof and stalls, you'll find plenty of spots to settle in for a while. Take your time: you're roughly halfway, and the afternoon brings the river and the cathedral.
Afternoon: along the Ness
Walk towards the Inverness Cathedral, dedicated to St Andrew, with its red towers and the light through its stained-glass windows. Then follow the banks of the River Ness, with its bridges and views over the water — the quietest and perhaps finest part of the day.
Practical
The route is about 4.6 kilometres with twelve stops and takes roughly one and a half to two and a half hours; with museum visits and lunch it easily fills a day. All you need is a phone, and you start at The Inverness Castle Experience.
That's how one day in Inverness becomes a complete experience. Play the free walk in the CityWalkGems app and let it guide you from stop to stop.
