The Vibrant Heart of Culture and Film

Our exploration begins at Piazza Grande, the beating heart of Locarno. This historic square, embraced by elegant arcades, transforms every year into a giant open-air cinema during the world-renowned Film Festival. Thousands of people then watch films under the stars, an atmosphere that electrifies the city. Near Piazza Grande is the Walk of Fame, a tribute to the legends of cinema. Here lie handprints and names of actors who have graced the city with their presence, a tangible reminder of the magic of the Film Festival.

The cultural journey continues at the Ghisla Art Collection, a museum that stands out with its clean lines and bold architecture. Inside, a collection of contemporary masterpieces awaits, ranging from Pop Art to Abstract Expressionism, challenging and inspiring. Another art treasure is Museo Casa Rusca, a beautiful historic house that was once the residence of a noble family. This elegant building now houses an impressive collection of works by Ticinese artists, with a serene courtyard and arcades forming a hidden gem.

A Journey Through Time: Castles and Stories

Locarno proudly wears its history, visible in the robust fortresses that protected the city for centuries. Castello Locarno is one such impressive fortress, whose walls tell stories of powerful families, sieges, and strategic alliances. It's fascinating to imagine how the Visconti family once ruled here, extending their influence across the entire region. History becomes tangible here.

Not far from there stands Castello Visconteo, a fortress that has withstood the test of time. This castle is living proof of Locarno's rich history, with its robust walls and towers telling tales of medieval lords and strategic defense. Inside is a fascinating museum with archaeological finds dating back to Roman times, making a visit to this castle feel like a journey through time.

Panoramic Splendor on Lake Maggiore

The beauty of Locarno extends to the shores of Lake Maggiore and the surrounding mountains. Step into the Funicolare Locarno, a charming cable car that takes you to breathtaking heights. As you ascend, a spectacular panorama of Locarno and Lake Maggiore unfolds, on your way to the famous Madonna del Sasso. For a relaxed exploration of the city and its surroundings, there's the Trenino Turistico. This cheerful tourist train, a beloved attraction since 1995, takes you along the lively promenade and through historic alleys.

The Lungolago di Locarno, the beautiful promenade along Lake Maggiore, is the perfect place for a leisurely stroll. Palm trees gently sway in the breeze, and the mountains rise majestically on the opposite shore. This area transformed in the 20th century from a simple embankment to the elegant boulevard it is today. With its large glass panels, it offers a spectacular view of Lake Maggiore, a place where well-being and aesthetics come together. For a moment of peace, there's the Fontana Pedrazzini, a modern artwork of water and light, paying tribute to the Pedrazzini family and offering a small oasis of calm with its playful design.
