Can you fill a day in Lyon without buying a single ticket? Mostly, yes. Much of what makes this city special — squares, alleyways, viewpoints and façades — is simply out on the street. This free self-guided walk strings those places together.
Free highlights along the route
The route counts twelve stops over roughly 4.5 kilometres. Place Bellecour, one of Europe's largest squares, crowned by the equestrian statue of Louis XIV, costs nothing. The Gothic exterior of the Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste is free to admire, as is the remarkable silhouette of the Gallo-Roman Museum of Lyon-Fourvière, tucked almost invisibly into the hillside — raw concrete facing Roman stone, a sight in itself. Up top stands the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, and the panorama over the city from that point may be the finest free moment of the whole walk.
What does charge admission
Honesty first: the museums along the way, such as the Gallo-Roman Museum and the Musée Cinéma et Miniature with its film props and miniature scenes, charge entry. The walk deliberately takes you past their exteriors — stepping inside is an optional extra. For the free programme, the streets, squares and panoramas fill a day on their own.
Two things worth knowing
Keep an eye out for these. Inside the cathedral hangs one of the oldest astronomical clocks in Europe, showing not just the hour but the positions of the moon and stars. And in Roman times Lyon was Lugdunum — not some provincial outpost, but the capital of all Gaul. On the hill you still walk straight past the evidence.
Free to play: how it works
The walk itself is free to play: open the route on your phone, stroll from stop to stop and solve a puzzle at each place — answers you can only find on location. Allow about two hours, including a steep climb to Fourvière. Start the free Lyon walk in the CityWalkGems app; your wallet can stay at home.
