One day in Lyon and no time to waste dithering on street corners. This itinerary follows the city's natural logic: the flat centre and the old quarter in the morning, the hill in the afternoon. Twelve stops, about 4.5 kilometres — very walkable as a one-day route.
Morning: Presqu'île and Old Lyon
Start on Place Bellecour, the enormous square between the Rhône and the Saône that has been the city's heart for centuries. Then cross into Vieux Lyon, the UNESCO-listed quarter where the Traboules du Vieux Lyon thread their way through the housing blocks — the hidden passages silk merchants used to move their fabric through the city, safe from the rain. Duck into at least one. In the same quarter you'll find the Musée Cinéma et Miniature: film props and miniature scenes so fine you can lose an hour without noticing. Budget for that deliberately, or it will eat your morning.
Midday: catch your breath in the old quarter
The lanes of Vieux Lyon are the natural place for a lunch break before the climbing starts. Take your time — the afternoon leg wants fresh legs.
Afternoon: Fourvière hill
After lunch, head up. At the top waits the Théâtre Gallo Romain, the Roman theatre of Lugdunum — once the capital of Gaul — where you can wander freely across the tiers. Next to it sits the Gallo-Roman Museum of Lyon-Fourvière, built into the hill itself; the contrast of raw concrete against Roman masonry is worth a photo stop. Finish at the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, the crown on the hill, with the most famous view over the city. In low afternoon light, Lyon looks its very best.
Practical notes for your day
The route doubles as a game: each stop pairs a story with a puzzle you solve on the spot — fun as a couple, with friends or as a family. The walk is free to play and takes about two hours of pure walking; add museum visits and lunch and it comfortably fills your day.
