One day is enough for Mutrah, the harbour quarter where Muscat is most itself. Mountains on one side, sea on the other, and between them a souq that has been busy for centuries. This route threads it into a logical day on foot.
Morning: the bay and the corniche
Begin at Maidan View while the light is still low and the bay lies in the shadow of the mountains. Then walk the Mutrah Corniche, the broad promenade along the water, all the way to Mutrah Pier. There they unload, repair and wait — this is still a harbour that works rather than one that poses.
Midday: into the souq
When the sun climbs, disappear into Mutrah Souq, which is exactly the moment the covered passages prove their worth. Get lost for an hour. In the Silver Souq hang khanjars and filigree that catch and hold the light. There is haggling, but no hurry; a glass of tea is part of it.
Late afternoon: gate and walls
Pause at the Grand Gate of Al Lawatiyah, the entrance to a quarter that belonged to the same community for generations. In the surrounding alleys stand the old watchtowers and remnants of Mutrah's city walls — the quarter was once fortified, and you can still read it.
Practical details
The route counts eleven stops, runs about 4.2 kilometres and takes an hour and a half of walking; with food, tea and looking around it fills a day without effort. Avoid the midday hours outdoors. Bring water and dress covered.
