Mutrah is the old harbour quarter of Muscat, wedged between the jagged Hajar Mountains and the Gulf of Oman. Behind the corniche lies a maze of alleys where frankincense, silver and sea air all run together. A quarter like that asks to be unravelled by playing.
How the hunt works
You open the walk straight in your browser — no download, no account. The route takes you from place to place, and at each stop you read the story and get a question. The answer isn't on your phone; it's around you, on a façade, a gate, a shop sign. You end up looking much more closely than you would otherwise.
What you'll come across
The hunt counts eleven stops. You begin at Maidan View, the lookout from which the whole Mutrah Corniche unrolls in a single glance. Further along wait Mutrah Pier, where dhows have moored for centuries, the Grand Gate of Al Lawatiyah with its carved woodwork, and Mutrah Souq, where the alleys branch until you lose your bearings entirely. Which question belongs to which stop we won't give away — that's the game.
Practical details
The route runs about 4.2 kilometres and takes roughly an hour and a half of walking, longer if the souq holds on to you. You start at Maidan View and move at your own pace. Bring water: in Oman, shade is not a luxury.
