In the heart of the Flemish Ardennes lies Oudenaarde, a city that is more than just a picturesque backdrop. It's a living museum where centuries of history seamlessly blend with a deep-rooted passion for cycling, and where every cobblestone whispers a story. From Gothic splendor to unexpected international connections, Oudenaarde surprises and enchants with its unique character.

A City of Gothic Splendor and Historic Echoes

Your journey through Oudenaarde inevitably begins at the imposing Town Hall (Stadhuis), a masterpiece of Brabantine Gothic architecture. This is no ordinary building; it's a place where centuries of history have unfolded, from grand council meetings to lively market days. Inside, you'll find the world-famous tapestries, so intricately woven that they tell epic stories in thread. It feels as if you're stepping into a living work of art, where every detail reveals a piece of the past.

Directly in front of the Town Hall stretches the Market Square (Markt) of Oudenaarde, for centuries the bustling heart of city life. This square, dominated by the Town Hall and its towering belfry, was where merchants hawked their wares and citizens gathered for festivities and important proclamations from the balcony. The energy of bygone eras is still palpable here.

From the vibrancy of the Market Square, you delve into the Bishop's Quarter (Bisschopskwartier), an atmospheric corner where time seems to slow down. Narrow, winding streets and historic buildings form the former ecclesiastical heart of Oudenaarde here, surrounding the magnificent St. Walburga Church (Sint-Walburgakerk). Hidden courtyards and old facades reveal themselves, each with its own character.

A little further on, you'll find the serene Refuge of Ename Abbey (Refuge van de Abdij van Ename). This was a vital urban outpost for the monks of Ename Abbey, a place of safety and trade, far from their rural monastery. Imagine the quiet comings and goings, the scholarly pursuits, and the storage of valuable goods within these walls. It's a place where much hidden life unfolded.

For a moment of tranquility, Liedtspark offers a peaceful oasis in the heart of Oudenaarde. This serene green lung was once the garden of the Liedts family mansion, and you can still feel that atmosphere of private grandeur. Seek out the beautiful pond and the mature trees that whisper tales of bygone times. Along the route, you'll also encounter the Eclectic Mansion of Alphonse Vossaert (Eclectisch Herenhuis van Alphonse Vossaert), a splendid example of late 19th-century grandeur. Various historical styles merge here into one magnificent facade, with intricate details and ornate balconies that are a feast for the eyes.

Where Cycling Legends Live and Forgotten Stories Resurface

Oudenaarde is inextricably linked to cycling, and nowhere is this felt as strongly as in the Tour of Flanders Centre (Centrum Ronde van Vlaanderen). This is the home of the Tour of Flanders, an immersive experience celebrating one of the toughest and most beloved one-day races in the world. The iconic 'Muur van Geraardsbergen' (Wall of Geraardsbergen) and 'Koppenberg' are legendary climbs that come to life here, and you can almost hear the roar of the crowd. It's the place where cycling legends are born.

The city also harbors places of solemn reflection and unexpected history. The Audenarde American Monument commemorates the American soldiers who bravely fought in this region during World War I, particularly during the liberation of Oudenaarde in October 1918. The eagle atop the column stands as a proud symbol of their sacrifice and courage, a powerful reminder of the price of freedom.

A truly unique place is the Tacámbaro Monument (Monument van Tacámbaro), a poignant tribute to a forgotten chapter of Belgian history. It commemorates the Belgian volunteers who fought in Mexico in the 1860s, a story of adventure, loyalty, and tragic loss. The monument's design, with its distinct Mexican influences, stands as a testament to this incredible, unexpected connection between Oudenaarde and a distant land.
