A Medieval Fortress on the Water

Your adventure in Sirmione inevitably begins at the imposing entrance gate: the Ponte Levatoio di Sirmione. This magnificent drawbridge forms the grand entrance to the historic center and the Scaligero Castle. As you cross, you feel the weight of history and imagine how knights and merchants traversed it for centuries. It is a portal to another era, guarded by the formidable walls of the castle.

Directly after the bridge, the Castello Scaligero di Sirmione rises from the waters of Lake Garda. This castle, a true testament to the power of the Scaliger family, guarded Sirmione for centuries with its imposing walls and drawbridges. Within the castle walls lies a marvel of medieval engineering: the Darsena di Sirmione. This incredible fortified harbor is one of the most unique features of the Scaligero Castle. It allowed the Scaliger fleet to be protected directly within the fortress, a testament to their strategic genius. It is rare to see a castle with its own internal harbor.

In the Footsteps of La Divina

Sirmione also has a deep connection with one of the greatest voices of the 20th century: Maria Callas. Her presence is palpable in various places throughout the town. The elegant Palazzo Callas Exhibitions is now a vibrant exhibition space, but once hosted grand events and reflects the cultural life of Sirmione. It is a place where art and history converge, honoring the legacy of 'La Divina'.

Not far from there lies the Villa di Maria Callas, her private retreat. This beautiful villa was where she could escape the demands of her extraordinary career and simply be herself, surrounded by the beauty of Lake Garda. The serene atmosphere here truly makes you feel her presence. For a moment of calm reflection, away from the hustle and bustle, the Parco Maria Callas offers a tranquil oasis. This serene park, with its lush greenery and peaceful paths, is dedicated to the legendary soprano. It's easy to imagine Maria Callas walking these paths, finding peace and perhaps even inspiration for her voice amidst nature.

Roman Echoes and Panoramic Views

The history of Sirmione stretches much further back than the Middle Ages and the 20th century. The town breathes the atmosphere of the Roman Empire, especially when you venture to the northern part of the peninsula. The Piazzale Orti Manara serves as a gateway to the incredible Grotte di Catullo. This area, once part of extensive Roman estates, offers views and a deep sense of history, recalling the layers of civilizations that have flourished here.

The absolute crown jewel of Roman history is the Grotte di Catullo e Museo Archeologico di Sirmione. These magnificent ruins are not actually caves, but the remains of an enormous Roman villa, believed to have belonged to the poet Catullus himself. Wander among the ancient arches and walls and imagine the luxurious life led here over 2,000 years ago, with unparalleled views of Lake Garda. It's incredible to stand where Romans once walked.

During your exploration of Sirmione, you will also encounter places that highlight the everyday history and natural beauty of the surroundings. A simple but profound reminder of the essence of life is the old Pozzo, a well that quenched thirst for centuries and played a vital role in the daily lives of its inhabitants. For an unparalleled panorama of Lake Garda, there is the Belvedere, a beautiful viewpoint where you can pause and breathe in the fresh air. The Passeggiata delle Muse is an enchanting path that winds along the shimmering lake, offering breathtaking views and leading you to the Grotte di Catullo, inviting reflection. And high above the lake, the Campana dei Caduti, the Bell of the Fallen, a solemn monument that not only offers a moment of remembrance but also panoramic views of Sirmione and its surroundings.
