Sittard: Where Ancient Walls Whisper Stories

The history of Sittard is deeply rooted in its past as a fortified city, a story that unfolds with every step you take. Begin your journey of discovery at Het Nieuwe Domein, a place where rich history comes to life in a modern way. This museum, housed in a beautifully restored monastery and a hypermodern new building, seamlessly connects old and new architecturally, offering a window into Limburgian art and culture.

Further on, at the Archeo Route Limburg - Geleenbeek Ligne, you'll feel Sittard's history as a fortified city. The Geleenbeek was a natural defensive line that was strategically reinforced. The contours in the landscape tell the story of centuries of struggle and protection. These defenses were further expanded with impressive constructions such as Fort Sanderbout. This fort, built in the 17th century, was an essential part of Sittard's fortifications and symbolizes the city's resilience.

Not only conflict, but also industry shaped the city. At 'Den Tegel' on the Molenbeek, you'll discover a hidden piece of Sittard's history. The Molenbeek was essential for daily life and crafts, and the name 'Den Tegel' (The Tile) recalls the clay extraction that once took place here. Amidst all these historical layers, you'll also encounter the soul of the city in the Statue of Zefke Mols. This legendary wanderer, known for his humor and independent spirit, is an icon of Sittard and reminds us that the true wealth of a city lies in its people and their stories.
