Free things to do in Stavanger: what does it really cost to see this city?

White wooden facades lighting up in the low northern sun, gulls over the harbour, cobbles clicking underfoot. Most of what makes Stavanger beautiful is outdoors — and outdoors is free. This twelve-stop route runs largely past squares, streets and facades where there is no ticket desk.

What costs nothing outside

Domkirkeplassen is the historic square at the heart of the city, ringed by the cathedral and old buildings; you can stand there as long as you like. Stavanger Cathedral is a sight from the outside alone: one of Norway's oldest and best-preserved cathedrals, Romanesque and Gothic forms mixed together, visible straight from the square. The buildings of the Stavanger City Museum and the Museum of Archaeology, University of Stavanger can likewise be admired from the street without paying anything. And the lanes in between — narrow, winding, lined with white wooden houses — are public space.

What does cost admission

Fair is fair: the interiors cost money. The City Museum, telling the road from fishing village to energy capital, and the Museum of Archaeology, with its golden treasures and finds from Stone Age hunters and Viking farmers, are museums with a ticket. The same goes for the other museum stops on the route. What it costs you check on site — we deliberately quote no prices that may change tomorrow. For the cathedral interior, too: check locally what applies that day.

Two things you can see for free

The square in front of the cathedral is not a stage set: over the centuries it has seen royal visits and busy markets come and go, and it is still the place where the city gathers. And look at the distances: from the cathedral to the square is under 200 metres, and most of the route sits inside a dense core just a few hundred metres across. You do not have to walk far to see the free version of Stavanger — it is stacked on top of itself.

And the tour itself?

It is free to play. The route opens straight in your browser, with no download and no account. Each stop brings a story and a question; a correct answer earns points and badges and unlocks the next location. Reckon on about three kilometres and one and a half to two hours, breaks included.
