Twelve stops, roughly three kilometres, one and a half to two hours of pure walking. That is the arithmetic of one day in Stavanger — and precisely why the day still has room in it. This plan follows the broad line of the route: first the old timber, then the harbour, then the colour and the story of the city.
Morning: white wood and old stone
Start in Gamle Stavanger, where narrow winding lanes run past perfectly preserved white wooden houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. In the morning it is quiet there and the light comes in low between the facades. Walk on into the centre, where Stavanger Cathedral towers over the city: one of Norway's oldest and best-preserved cathedrals, Romanesque and Gothic forms standing side by side. Take your time on the square in front of it; those first two stops set the tone for the rest of the day.
Around midday: the harbour and the colours
Stavanger's centre sits compactly along the water, so moving to the harbour costs you no time at all. This is the natural moment to pause. Afterwards, turn into Fargegaten, the Colour Street, where traditional wooden houses are painted in every imaginable shade, from bright pink to deep blue. The contrast with the white morning is the best photograph of the day.
Afternoon: Vikings and the city itself
Down at the quay, Viking House opens a gateway to the past with interactive exhibits and a VR experience built around the sagas and everyday Viking life. Finish at the Stavanger City Museum, which tells the whole story: from modest fishing village to today's bustling energy city, with old crafts and the rise of the canning industry in between.
How much time to set aside
Walking alone is half a day. Step inside two or three stops as well — a museum, Viking House — and it becomes a full day; those interiors charge admission, so check locally what applies. If you only have two hours, do the outside and you will still have seen the city.
The route itself is free to play and opens straight in your browser: a story and a question at each stop, with a correct answer earning points and badges and unlocking the next location. Plan your day in Stavanger with the CityWalkGems app.
