Much of the best of Warsaw costs nothing. The squares, the brick gate, the monuments and the façades of the rebuilt Old Town you simply admire from outside. This self-guided walk strings those free places together, with small puzzles along the way that make you look more closely.
Playing for free
You open the route in your browser — no download, no account — and play the eight stops for free. At each place you read the story and solve a puzzle whose answer lies in the surroundings themselves. A way to really get to know Warsaw without paying for it.
What you see for free from outside
The Warsaw Uprising Monument stands openly on its square; it is a place to pause over what the city went through in 1944. Sigismund's Column and Castle Square, the brick Barbican and the imposing outer walls of the Royal Castle you take in without a ticket. The façade of the POLIN Museum too, with its rippling glass on the ground of the former ghetto, and the sight of the Museum of Warsaw on the Old Town Square belong to the free, outdoor side of the route.
Where you do pay entry
Fair is fair: the interiors of the museums cost money. To see the POLIN Museum, the Royal Castle or the Museum of Warsaw from the inside, you buy a ticket there. The walk itself and all the outdoor places stay free.
Practical
The route is about 3.5 kilometres and takes roughly one and a half to two hours. All you need is a phone and you walk at your own pace.
That's Warsaw at its generous best. Play the free walk in the CityWalkGems app and let it guide you from place to place.
