One day in Annecy: three kilometres that can fill half a day or a whole one

The route has twelve stops and runs about three kilometres. Walking it straight through takes one and a half to two hours — that is a morning. Add the castle museum and the animation centre and it becomes a full day. Here is what that day looks like if you build it along the water.

Morning: the lake and the shore

Start where the town is widest. Le Pâquier is the big lakeside meadow, for centuries the common pasture where townspeople grazed their cattle. Then cross the Pont des Amours — the bridge with the legend that lovers who kiss in the middle stay together forever — to the Jardins de l'Europe, a park from the mid-19th century with trees well over a hundred years old. This part is flat and calm; it also holds the two longest walking stretches of the route.

Midday: the old town and the canals

From the water you dive into the old town. Its centre is the Quai de l'Île with the Palais de l'Île: a medieval prison and former courthouse, shaped like a ship, apparently moored in the middle of the Thiou. Everything here sits close together — eight stops within a kilometre and a half — so this is the natural moment to eat and linger.

Afternoon: the height and the culture

Climb to the Musée-Château d'Annecy, once the residence of the counts of Geneva and the dukes of Nemours, half medieval fortress and half Renaissance palace, now housing a museum of regional art, history and natural history. Lower down stands the Église Notre Dame de Liesse, where behind a 19th-century neoclassical front lie far older layers, down to a Roman temple. Finish at the Cité internationale du cinéma d'animation in a restored former seminary: home of the town's well-known animation festival.

Practical notes for your day

You are not tied to this order — you may start anywhere on the route, so reverse it if you happen to be in the old town first thing. Count on about three kilometres, with almost 700 metres as the longest single stretch and cobbled lanes in the centre. The tour is free to play and opens straight in your browser; admission for museum interiors you check on the spot.
