In the middle of the river Thiou stands a medieval prison that looks ready to sail off. That is usually enough to get a child to look up from a phone. Annecy with kids works for exactly that reason: the route is short, runs almost entirely along the water, and has something you can point at every few hundred metres.
The stops children actually go for
The Quai de l'Île is the showstopper: the Palais de l'Île, once a prison and courthouse, splits the river like the bow of a ship. Ask where the cabin would be. The Pont des Amours supplies the story — legend says lovers who kiss in the middle of the bridge stay together forever, which with children reliably produces loud objections, and that is the point. The Jardins de l'Europe are the breather: a park from the mid-19th century with trees well over a hundred years old, ducks on the water and enough shade to sit down. And the Musée-Château d'Annecy, high above the old town, is a real castle: half medieval fortress, half Renaissance palace, once home to the counts of Geneva.
Honest about the distance
The full route is about three kilometres across twelve stops. That is doable from roughly age five or six, but count on one and a half to two hours including looking and resting. The longest stretch between two points is close to 700 metres — that is the hardest part of the walk; everything else sits much closer together. Two things to plan for: the old-town lanes are cobbled, so a pushchair rattles, and the castle stands above the town, so there is a climb. You can start anywhere, so if you want to skip the climb, simply begin lower down along the water.
How to play it together
The route opens in your browser, with no download or account. At each stop you get the story of the place and one question whose answer is somewhere around you; a correct answer means points, a badge and the next location. Let the youngest child handle the buttons and it stays a game rather than a walk. The tour is free to play.
