There is a medieval building in the Thiou shaped like a ship. It has never moved, and still it looks as if it is sailing. Ten minutes into a treasure hunt through Annecy you notice that this town does not hang its history on facades alone but on water — which means you have to look twice: once up, once at the reflection.
What makes this treasure hunt in Annecy different
In many old towns every clue sits at eye level in a wall. Here the town is stacked in layers you have to walk through. On the Quai de l'Île stands the Palais de l'Île, a medieval prison and former courthouse that splits the river like a prow — arguably the most photographed spot in town. Above the old town the Musée-Château d'Annecy keeps watch: once the residence of the counts of Geneva and the dukes of Nemours, half medieval fortress, half Renaissance palace. And the Église Notre Dame de Liesse shows how deep time runs here: behind a 19th-century neoclassical front lie far older buildings, down to a Roman temple. Three places, three eras, less than a kilometre apart.
How the treasure hunt works
The route opens straight in your browser — no download, no account. You walk from point to point, read the story of that place where you stand, then answer a question whose answer is somewhere around you. Get it right and you collect points and a badge, and the next location unlocks. Which question belongs to which place we are obviously not giving away here.
What to watch for along the way
The Pont des Amours carries a legend: lovers who kiss in the middle of the bridge stay together forever. The bridge links the Jardins de l'Europe — a park laid out in the mid-19th century on what was then marshland, with trees well over a hundred years old — to the open lakeside meadow. Hunters who only look down will miss the mountains.
Practical
Twelve stops, about three kilometres, one and a half to two hours. The longest stretch between two points is close to 700 metres; the rest sit closer together. You can start anywhere, break off and pick up later. The tour is free to play, and all you need is your phone.
