How much of Duluth can you see without once reaching for your wallet? A surprising amount — because the best of this city is public space. The twelve-stop route runs mostly along water, quays and monuments that belong to everyone.
Free along the waterfront
The Duluth Lakewalk is a wooden path along Lake Superior that creaks softly underfoot; joggers, cyclists and walkers share the view, and there is no ticket desk. The same goes for Canal Park, where terraces and artworks now stand where cranes and trucks once ruled. The outside of the Historic Union Depot costs nothing either: the facade tells you plenty about the railway era before you have set foot inside. And the ship's horn that booms across the canal as a vessel approaches can be heard from the quay — free, and for many visitors the most striking moment of the day.
What does cost admission
Fair is fair: several stops on this route have interiors you pay for. The Lake Superior Railroad Museum, where towering locomotives stand beside elegant carriages, is a museum. The steel ore carrier William A Irvin is visited on board with a ticket. And the historic train of the North Shore Scenic Railroad runs with paying passengers. What that costs, check locally — we deliberately quote no prices that could be different tomorrow. If you want a genuinely free day, take those three from the outside: the platform, the hull at the dock, the great hall.
Where the free half is strongest
Most of the twelve stops sit in open public space: quayside, lakeshore, squares and monuments. That means you can walk the entire route, read every story and solve every question without going indoors anywhere. Come back later for the museums and you will already know the city from the outside in.
And the tour itself?
It is free to play. The route opens straight in your browser — no download, no account. At each stop you get a story and a question; a correct answer earns points and badges and unlocks the next location. Reckon on about 4.4 kilometres and 1.5 to 2.5 hours, and pause whenever you like.
