An ore freighter with a swimming pool on board. That is the kind of fact a child stops dead for — and Duluth is full of them. This walk through Duluth with kids runs past machines too big to take in with one look, with a lake the size of a sea alongside.
What kids notice first
Inside the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, towering locomotives stand beside elegant carriages, and the smell of oil and old wood comes with them. At the North Shore Scenic Railroad platform waits a steam locomotive that looks ready to whistle at any moment — the kind of wheels children refuse to walk away from. Down at the dock lies the William A Irvin, a steel ore carrier that hauled tons of iron across the lake and still had a pool on board. In the Historic Union Depot, footsteps echo across marble floors under lofty arches and stained-glass windows.
Outside: water, boards and room to move
After all that steel, the Duluth Lakewalk is a relief: a wooden path along the water that creaks softly underfoot, with joggers and cyclists and Lake Superior stretching away. It carries on to Canal Park, where terraces and artworks now stand where cranes and trucks once ruled. Plenty of space to run off some energy between two stops.
Honest about the distance
The full route is about 4.4 kilometres and takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours. That is a lot for short legs. The longest single stretch between stops is roughly 780 metres; the rest are shorter. The Lakewalk and Canal Park are flat and stroller-friendly, and the railway stops sit close together, so that part of the walk moves quickly. You can pause anywhere and pick it up later, which makes splitting the route across two sessions easy with younger children.
How you play it together
Every stop comes with a story and a question whose answer is somewhere around you. Get it right and you earn points and badges, and the next location unlocks. Children who cannot read yet can still take part: an adult reads aloud, the child does the looking — this game is mostly about noticing things. The tour is free to play and runs straight in the browser, with no download and no account.
