One day in Duluth: steel in the morning, water in the afternoon

Twelve stops, 4.4 kilometres, between 1.5 and 2.5 hours of actual walking. That is the arithmetic of a day in Duluth — and exactly why there is room for so much else around it. This plan follows the broad shape of the route: rails first, then the quay, then the lake.

Morning: steel, marble and steam

Start where Duluth found its voice. In the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, towering locomotives stand beside elegant carriages in a hall that smells of oil and old wood. Next door, the Historic Union Depot opens its great hall: marble floors, lofty arches, stained glass, and the echo of footsteps where thousands of travellers once gathered. On the North Shore Scenic Railroad platform, a steam locomotive waits as if it could leave at any moment. These stops sit close together, so this stretch is about looking rather than walking.

Around midday: Canal Park

Canal Park is the natural pause. Where cranes and trucks once ruled, terraces and artworks now line the water, with views of the lake and the famous bridge. Sit for a while, then move on.

Afternoon: along the water

The Duluth Lakewalk gets you moving again: a wooden path that creaks softly underfoot, with the fresh smell of Lake Superior and joggers and cyclists passing by. Along the way, the William A Irvin lies at the dock — a steel ore carrier that hauled tons of iron across the lake and still had a swimming pool on board. When a ship approaches the canal, the horn booms deep across the water. That is the sound you will remember from the day.

How much day do you need?

Walking only, this is a half day. Add the interiors — the ship, the locomotive hall, a ride on the historic train — and it becomes a full one; those interiors charge admission, and what exactly is worth checking locally. If you only have a couple of hours, take the outsides and you will still have seen the city.

The route itself is free to play and opens straight in your browser: a story and a question at every stop, and a correct answer earns points, badges and the next location. Plan your day in Duluth with the CityWalkGems app.
