Majestic Highlights of the Old Town

Our journey of discovery begins at the impressive Girona Cathedral, a structure that immediately draws your gaze upwards. The nave of this cathedral is the widest Gothic nave in the world, an architectural marvel that took master builders centuries to complete. Its scale is so grand that it seems almost impossible for the roof to stand. Near the cathedral is the Museu d'Art de Girona, housed in an old palace. Here you wander through halls full of art, from medieval saints' statues to modern paintings, with a magnificent ceiling in the Gothic hall as a special detail. The Cloister of Girona Cathedral offers a shady oasis where time seems to stand still. Look closely at the capitals, where lions lurk, monsters dance, and strange plants grow from the stone; every corner tells a story. From this historic heart, the Passeig arqueològic leads you over the old city wall. Here you literally walk through history, with wild flowers growing between the stones and watchtowers silently overseeing the city.

A Mosaic of Cultures and Times

Girona is a city where different cultures have left their mark. A highlight is a visit to the Arab Baths, where steam rises between the ancient stones and the scent of mint and soap envelops you. The light filtering through the dome creates a special atmosphere, bringing history to life here in steam and silence. Further on, you'll discover the Museu d'Història de Girona, behind an old facade full of stories. From Roman excavations to secret passages, this museum is full of surprises, including a small owl above the entrance as a nod from the architect. In a narrow street, you'll find the Museu d'Història dels Jueus, which illuminates Girona's Jewish past. On a weathered stone at the entrance are mysterious Hebrew characters, a message from another time that makes the power of memory palpable. At the Baluard de Sant Francesc - Monument del Lleó, a proud lion guards the city. According to tradition, it brings good luck if you touch the lion's head, evident from the shiny spot on its nose, a sign of old city tales that live on here.

Girona's Modern Spirit on the Onyar

The city is not only a treasure trove of the past but also embraces modern times, often with a nod to its rich heritage. The Pont de les Peixateries Velles, a red steel bridge, leaps like a giant jigsaw puzzle over the Onyar River. This bridge was designed by none other than Gustave Eiffel, just before he created his famous tower in Paris, showcasing how engineering and beauty intersect. Near the river stands the Basílica de Sant Feliu, with sturdy statues welcoming you. Saint George, especially, stands out with his sword, and according to legend, he defeated a dragon here. The basilica's facade is full of stories and symbols. The Museu del Cinema-Col·lecció Tomàs Mallol displays a world full of illusion and technology behind its round windows. The facade, a celebration of brick and iron, is typical of Catalan modernism and lets the magic of the silver screen begin even before you enter. Finally, the CaixaForum Girona offers a serene space where light streams through high windows onto the gleaming marble floor. Here, amidst modern art, silence is almost a work of art in itself.

This walk through Girona is just a glimpse into the many layers this city has to offer. Every alley, every facade, and every bridge has its own story, often with hidden details and riddles waiting to be discovered.
