Much of the best of Ljubljana costs nothing at all. The squares, the bridges over the Ljubljanica, the castle hill and the city's largest park belong to everyone. And the self-guided walk itself? Free to play.
The walk is free to play
You open the route in your browser — no download, no account — and play the twelve-stop tour for free. At every stop you read the story of that place and solve a puzzle. A free way not just to see Ljubljana, but to learn how to read it.
What you can see for free in Ljubljana
Most of the route happens outdoors. Tivoli Park is open to all: stroll the Jakopič Promenade, often hung with open-air photography exhibitions, towards the elegant Cekin Mansion. The hill around Ljubljana Castle you climb on foot, and the view over the rooftops costs you nothing but your calves. Prešernov trg is the beating heart of the city: the pink Franciscan Church, the statue of France Prešeren, and the constant coming and going of Ljubljana itself. The Neo-Renaissance palaces housing the National Museum of Slovenia and the City Museum of Ljubljana can be admired from the outside without paying a cent.
Honest: where you do pay admission
If you want to go inside, you pay. That applies to the exhibitions of the National Museum of Slovenia and the City Museum of Ljubljana, and to the paid attractions on the castle hill. The buildings, the squares, the parks and the views are free; only stepping inside costs money. You can walk the entire route without opening your wallet once.
Practical
The route is about 4.6 kilometres and has twelve stops. Allow one and a half to two and a half hours. All you need is a phone, and you walk at your own pace.
That's how you discover Ljubljana for free and still get the story. Start the walk in the CityWalkGems app and let the city do the talking.
