One day in Ljubljana: a walking itinerary

One day in Ljubljana is enough to understand the city — as long as you go on foot. Slovenia's capital is compact: museums, squares, bridges and the park all sit within walking distance of each other, with the Ljubljanica river as the connecting thread. Here is how to spend that day.

Morning: the history beneath the streets

Begin where Ljubljana explains itself. The National Museum of Slovenia, housed in a Neo-Renaissance palace, is the country's oldest and largest museum and keeps everything from prehistoric finds to Roman archaeology. Nearby, the City Museum of Ljubljana in the grand Auersperg Palace tells the story of the city itself: from pile dwellings in the marshes to Roman Emona, whose remains lie literally beneath your feet. Start the morning with these two and you will see more for the rest of the day.

Around midday: the river and the old heart

Then walk to the Ljubljanica. On the Butchers' Bridge hang the love locks, but it is the sculptures by Jakov Brdar — mythological figures, grotesque satyrs — that make you stop. Across the water lies Town Square, the historic heart of the Old Town, with the Baroque Robba Fountain depicting the three Carniolan rivers. Medieval and Baroque façades crowd in on every side. The riverside quays are the natural place to sit down for a while.

Afternoon: up and around

The afternoon belongs to the higher part of the city and the way back through the old streets. The twelve-stop route links the museums, the bridges and the squares into one logical loop, so you never double back and still miss nothing.

Practical

The full walk is roughly 4.6 kilometres and takes one and a half to two and a half hours of pure walking — with a museum visit and a long lunch it fills a day effortlessly. All you need is a phone; at every stop there is a puzzle to solve.

The route is free to play. Open the one-day Ljubljana itinerary in the CityWalkGems app and let the city set the order.
