Ljubljana treasure hunt: read the city like a riddle

On the Dragon Bridge four copper dragons stare you down, and for a second it feels as if they know something you don't. That is exactly what a treasure hunt through Ljubljana feels like: the city keeps its answers in plain sight, but you have to learn how to look. Slovenia's capital is compact, green and cut through by the Ljubljanica river — the perfect size for a self-guided walking tour built around puzzles.

How the Ljubljana treasure hunt works

You open the route in your browser: no download, no account. At every stop you get the story of that place and one puzzle whose answer is hidden in your surroundings — in a façade, a statue, a detail you would normally walk straight past. Only when you find it does the route move on. For twelve stops, Ljubljana stops being scenery and becomes an opponent.

Palaces, parks and squares along the way

The hunt takes in Prešernov trg, the buzzing main square with its pink Franciscan Church and the statue of the poet France Prešeren. At the National Gallery of Slovenia, housed in a Neo-Renaissance palace, hangs the finest collection of Slovenian art from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The City Museum of Ljubljana, in the grand Auersperg Palace, holds the city's layers: prehistoric pile dwellings, Roman Emona, modern Ljubljana. And in Tivoli Park, the city's largest green lung, the Jakopič Promenade — often lined with open-air photography exhibitions — leads to the elegant Cekin Mansion. Four places, four completely different voices of the same city.

Practical: distance, time and what you need

The full route has twelve stops and runs to roughly 4.6 kilometres. Allow one and a half to two and a half hours, depending on how long a puzzle holds you. All you need is a phone; you walk at your own pace and can break whenever you like.

Who this walking tour suits

Anyone who would rather discover Ljubljana than tick it off: couples, groups of friends, families with kids who need something to do. The treasure hunt is free to play — open it in the CityWalkGems app and let the dragons guess who wins.
