From Fortress to Royal Heritage

Our exploration begins at Malmö Castle, locally known as Malmöhus Slott. This structure, now peacefully situated by the water, was once an impregnable fortress. Over the centuries, it transformed from a grim defensive post into a royal residence, and now functions as a museum. Inside, you'll find not only art and history, but also an aquarium and even a tropical rainforest – an unexpected combination that brings past and present together. Nearby stands the Castle Mill, or Slottsmöllan, a windmill that is a living monument to Malmö's history. This mill was once essential for the city's food supply, with its sails grinding grain, a reminder of Malmö's industrial soul long before the modern city emerged.

Deeper in the city, on Stortorget, stands the equestrian statue of Charles X Gustav. This monument commemorates the king who definitively made Malmö and the rest of Skåne Swedish in 1658 with the Treaty of Roskilde. His presence recalls a turbulent past, and the details on the pedestal tell stories of battles and triumphs. Not far from here, in the heart of Stortorget, you'll find the Torgbrunnen, a fountain that has been a meeting point for centuries. The gentle sound of the trickling water creates a serene atmosphere, and the sculptures tell tales of the sea and trade, a nod to Malmö's maritime history.

Another historical beacon is St. Peter's Church (Sankt Petri Kyrka). This brick Gothic church, with its tall spire, is an architectural masterpiece and a silent witness to the many changes the city has undergone. Inside, beautiful frescoes can be found, and the details in the masonry are a testament to human creation.

Green Oases and City Squares

Malmö is also known for its extensive parks, which function as green lungs in the middle of the city. The Slottsträdgården is a carefully designed garden with various themed areas that stimulate the senses, from a fragrant herb garden to a serene Japanese garden. It's a place where the seasons can truly be felt and where nature invites tranquility. Directly next to it lies Kungsparken, a park laid out in the 19th century. It is an example of an English landscape garden, with winding paths, open lawns, and a collection of exotic trees. The canals that meander through it are actually remnants of the old city moat.

From the tranquility of the parks, we dive into the vibrancy of the city. Lilla Torg is a charming square, surrounded by half-timbered houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. Markets were held here for centuries, and today it is a lively meeting place with cafés and restaurants. The cobbled streets and historic architecture transport you back in time, while the modern energy of the terraces reminds you that this square is still full of life.

Another important square is Gustav Adolfs torg, one of Malmö's squares, named after a legendary king. This is a place where the grandeur of the city comes alive, surrounded by buildings and with a monument in the center. It is a hub of activity, where people gather and the city buzzes.

Art, Culture, and Hidden Details

Malmö also surprises with its cultural offerings and unexpected details that give the city its unique character. The Malmö Konsthall is an example of modern architecture, with a striking roof construction and an abundance of natural light. This building is designed to let art breathe and offer visitors a unique experience, with open, bright spaces where art truly shines.

Amidst the historic buildings, you'll also find modern expressions, such as the mural 'The Magic Book'. This vibrant mural transforms an everyday wall into an explosion of color and fantasy, as if stories from a book are leaping onto the street. Sherlocked, a building with an intriguing facade on old Östergatan, also shows how Malmö embraces its rich past while simultaneously creating a place for new, exciting experiences, such as escape rooms.

This exploration offers only a glimpse of what Malmö has to offer. The city harbors many more hidden details, captivating stories, and surprising places waiting to be discovered.
