One day in Potsdam: how much day do twelve stops actually take?

Walking alone, this route takes roughly one and a half to two and a half hours over about 4.6 km. That is a morning. But five of the twelve stops are buildings you can go inside, and the moment you open two or three of them, your day is full. That sum decides how you plan one day in Potsdam.

Morning: the town behind the palaces

Start in the historic heart, on Alter Markt, where an obelisk rises in Egyptian form, carrying hieroglyphs that contain the names of the royal family — commissioned by Frederick the Great. Nearby, the Filmmuseum Potsdam occupies the former royal stables, with German film history and the Babelsberg Studios as its subject. The Naturkundemuseum Potsdam is the other morning candidate: fossils, the biodiversity of Brandenburg and interactive displays. Pick one if you want to keep the afternoon free, or both if you want a slow day on purpose. The morning ends at Potsdam's Brandenburg Gate, twin to its Berlin namesake, built to celebrate the victory in the Seven Years' War.

Around midday: the transition

Between the town and the palace gardens lies the longest leg of the whole route: just under nine hundred metres. That is exactly the moment to pause and eat before you enter the park — after that the stops sit much closer together and you will not want to stop again.

Afternoon: the palace gardens

Schlosspark Sanssouci opens with the vineyard terraces Frederick the Great had built. On those terraces stands the Great Fountain, ringed by statues of gods and mythological creatures; Frederick dreamed of a spectacular water display, although the technology of his time never quite did what he expected. The New Chambers are the richest interior of the afternoon: once an orangery, later rebuilt as a guest residence for royal visitors and philosophers, with marble and gilding in abundance. And the day ends at the Chinese House, a playful ode to chinoiserie, its golden figures each holding a pose of its own — Frederick's spot for intimate garden parties.

How much day do you really need?

Walking and looking from the outside only: a morning, done by lunch. With two interiors: a comfortable full day. With three or more: budget the whole day and plan your way back. The route has a fixed starting point and a fixed order, opens in your browser without a download or account, and is free to play. At every stop you hear the story and answer a question that earns points and badges. For the interiors, expect an entrance fee; check the prices on the spot.
