A Potsdam treasure hunt: from royal stables to a gilded Chinese pavilion

In the middle of a Prussian park stands a pavilion in Chinese style, ringed by golden figures, each with its own pose and expression. A few hundred metres away, water dances between statues of gods and mythological creatures. And the walk begins in the ordinary city, on a market square. A treasure hunt through Potsdam is really two hunts in a row.

Two cities in one route

The first half plays out in the centre, where the history of Potsdam presents itself as a working town. The Filmmuseum Potsdam occupies the former royal stables: a building meant for horses that now tells the story of German cinema, with the legendary Babelsberg Studios at its heart. Then the route tips into the palace grounds. Schlosspark Sanssouci is not an ordinary park but a vast design, with terraces Frederick the Great had built for his vineyards, turning the hillside into a living work of art.

What makes this hunt different here

In most cities the clues sit on facades. In Potsdam they sit in garden architecture. The New Chambers began as an orangery and were rebuilt as a guest residence for royal visitors and philosophers, heavy with marble and gilding. The Great Fountain is the vibrant heart of the terraces, even though the technology of Frederick's own day never quite delivered the spectacle he imagined. And the Chinese House is a playful ode to chinoiserie, an eighteenth-century fashion. You are constantly looking at buildings put up to resemble something else — and that is exactly what the questions are about.

How it works

The route opens straight in your browser, with no download and no account. You walk from stop to stop, hear the story on the spot, then answer one question; the answer is somewhere around you. A correct answer earns points and badges and unlocks the next location. Which question belongs to which place, we are obviously not saying here.

Practical details

Twelve stops, about 4.6 km, roughly one and a half to two and a half hours at a steady pace. The longest single stretch stays just under nine hundred metres and falls in the first part; inside the gardens the stops lie far closer together. The route has a fixed starting point and a fixed order. You can pause — your progress is kept. Playing is free.
