Potsdam with kids: a fountain full of gods and a palace smaller than expected

Water shooting up between stone gods and mythological creatures, and above it a staircase of vineyard terraces climbing towards a yellow palace. That is the view most children in Potsdam actually keep their eyes on. And it sits right in the middle of this walking route — which is convenient, because everything after it gets shorter and closer together.

The stops children really go for

The Great Fountain is the easy one: kids can walk around the statues of gods and mythical beings and count who is holding which animal or object. Sanssouci Palace is a good second, precisely because it disappoints in size — almost everyone expects an enormous castle and gets a surprisingly intimate summer house named "without worries". That makes a fine question to ask on the way: why would a king call his house that? The Filmmuseum Potsdam works for older children: it sits in the former royal stables and is about the Babelsberg Studios, so about how films get made. And the Sanssouci Picture Gallery suits children who like searching — a room of Baroque and Rococo paintings, with work by Rubens, Van Dyck and Caravaggio, where a single canvas easily hides ten things to point at.

Honest about the distance

This is not a short loop. The route is about 4.6 km with twelve stops; with a child along you are looking at half a day rather than the one and a half to two and a half hours the map suggests. The longest single stretch stays just under nine hundred metres and falls in the first half, so you get it out of the way before the good part — worth knowing with small legs. From the palace gardens onward the stops lie far closer together; the shortest hop is under two hundred metres. Inside the park you walk park paths and climb alongside terraces: a pushchair is possible, but not equally smooth everywhere. Under about six, shortening the route beats pushing through.

How it works on the way

The route opens in your browser, no download and no account, so one phone is enough. At each stop you hear the story and then answer a question; the answer is around you, so children can genuinely join the search. A correct answer earns points and badges and unlocks the next location — that "just one more" works better than any encouragement.

Practical details

Twelve stops, about 4.6 km, a fixed starting point and a fixed order, pausing allowed and your progress kept. Playing is free. For the interiors — the museums, the picture gallery and the palace — expect an entrance fee; check on the spot what it costs.
