Baroque saints look down from their pedestals, a castle traces its outline high above the river, and by the water stands a medieval tower that hasn't had to stop anyone for centuries. Ptuj is full of details you would normally walk straight past — until you turn the town into a treasure hunt, and every detail might be a clue.
How the treasure hunt works
You open the walk right in your browser: no app download, no account. The route counts twelve stops. At each one you read the story of the place and solve a puzzle, and the answer is hiding right there — in a facade, an inscription, a statue. A city walk quietly turns into a game that makes you look twice at everything.
From castle hill to river tower
The trail begins at Ptuj Castle, which has crowned the hill above the Drava for more than a thousand years. In the centre, two Baroque showpieces await: the Marijin steber, the Marian Column of 1700 raised in gratitude after the plague, and Sveti Florijan, Saint Florian, watching over the town since 1745 as protector against fire and flood. Down by the river stands the Drauturm, the Drava Tower, a sturdy survivor of the medieval defences. Which puzzle belongs to which place? That we won't reveal — that's the game.
Practical details
The route is about 4 kilometres and takes one and a half to two hours, depending on your pace and how long you linger over the river views. You start at the castle and continue through the centre at your own rhythm. All you need is a charged phone, and the treasure hunt is free to play.
Take that first step up the castle hill and see how much more Ptuj reveals once you have to search for it.
