Ptuj is compact enough for a single day and rich enough to fill it completely. With twelve stops along roughly four kilometres, you wander at your own pace from Baroque squares to Roman remains — here is how one day in Ptuj falls naturally into place.
Morning: the old centre
Begin among the monuments of the old town. The City Tower has stood guard here since the 16th century, its clock faces showing centuries of craftsmanship. Close by rises the Marijin steber, the Marian Column of 1700, raised in gratitude after the plague. And Sveti Florijan, patron saint against fire and flood since 1745, looks on in full armour.
Midday: catch your breath
Around the squares of the centre, a break comes naturally. Take your time — the afternoon has plenty in store and the route isn't going anywhere.
Afternoon: art and Romans
After lunch the scenery shifts. In the Galerija mesta Ptuj, housed in a former monastery, contemporary art converses with centuries-old walls. The statue of Rudolf Maister honours the general-poet who defended the northern borders after the First World War. And in the Poetovio Archaeological Park you end among the traces of one of the region's most important Roman cities, where mosaics betray the luxury of their day.
Turn the day into a game
If you want more out of it, play the city walk as you go: a story and a puzzle at every stop, right in your browser, free to play. The route is about 4 kilometres, takes one and a half to two hours and starts at the castle — after which the day unfolds by itself along everything above.
