Free things to do in Sydney: a self-guided walk

Sydney can be a pricey city, yet many of its finest spots cost nothing. Go on foot and you see the city at its best — and the walk itself is free to play.

The walk is free

You open the route in your browser, with no download or account, and play the nine-stop tour for free. Along the way you read the story at each place and solve a puzzle — a free way to really get to know Sydney.

What you can enjoy for free

Many highlights of the route are public and cost nothing: the Royal Botanic Garden with its views over the harbour, the green expanse of Hyde Park with the Archibald Memorial Fountain, and the historic Customs House at Circular Quay. You can also wander freely past the sandstone façades of the Hyde Park Barracks and along the quay by the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, with the harbour and its bridges within reach.

Honest: what does cost admission

Some attractions charge if you go inside or up. That applies to the Sydney Tower Eye observation deck and to BridgeClimb Sydney; museums along the route may charge admission or ask for a donation too. The buildings, parks and views around them are free to admire.

Practical

The route is about 3.6 kilometres and takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. All you need is a phone, and you start at the Sydney Tower Eye.

That's how you discover Sydney without reaching for your wallet. Start the free walk in the CityWalkGems app and let the city tell its stories.
