Levoča: a town that lives behind its own walls

Anyone traveling through Slovakia toward the High Tatras almost automatically passes by Levoča, and whoever just drives on is missing something. This town in the Spiš region has preserved most of its medieval fortifications, and you can feel it literally: rest your hand against the town wall and you're standing on the edge of what was, for centuries, the boundary between inside and outside. Anyone searching for things to do in Levoča will find a town compact enough to cross in a single morning, yet dense enough with history to fill an entire day.

Inside the walls, outside the gates

Levoča's old town is a clearly defined whole, and that was no accident. A large part of the medieval town wall still stands, and anyone wanting to get inside had to pass through one of the gates. The Košická brána is the best known: the name simply means 'the one toward Košice,' and the gate served as a signpost to that major city in the southeast. Here merchants with their loaded carts were inspected before reaching the central square. At night the gates closed, and the town, it seems, became an island within its own walls.

Not every tower with a gate-like name was actually a town gate. The Poľská brána, the 'Polish Gate,' dates from the second half of the 14th century but probably served mainly as access to the outbuildings of the old Franciscan monastery. A trumpeter and a watchman once kept an eye on the surroundings here; later the tower received bells and became part of a church. It's a fine example of how names in Levoča often reveal more about function than origin.

A town that governed, not just traded

Levoča wasn't just a trading town with walls. For centuries this region belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary, and Levoča was for a long time the administrative seat of Spiš county. That past is reflected in facades like the Nagy megyei ház, the 'Great County House': behind that name, Hungarian in the middle of Slovakia, decisions were once made for an entire region, from mountain villages to market towns.

Power in Spiš also had a family name, and that name was Thurzo. Around 1500, this family from the region grew into one of the most powerful in the Kingdom of Hungary. Juraj Thurzo even rose to palatine, the highest official directly below the king. The Thurzov Dom on the square keeps that name alive, a reminder of how local families sometimes reached far beyond their own region.

Not everything in Levoča revolves around power and trade. The Museum of Special Education, just a few steps from the bustle around the basilica, tells a quieter story: how education was developed for children who were deaf, blind, or otherwise vulnerable, and what methods and tools were devised for it. Anyone wanting the whole region in a single overview is better off starting at the Spiš Museum on the square named after Master Paul, where the history of Spiš comes together, from the town itself to the mountain villages toward the Tatras.

The wood that climbs 18 meters high

That name, Master Paul, isn't mentioned early in the walk for nothing. This woodcarver created the piece Levoča is internationally known for: the main altar in the Basilica of St. Jacob. The altar stands in the church's choir, is over 18 meters tall, and is considered the tallest Gothic wooden altar in the world. Step into the basilica and you'll first smell the old wood and candles before your gaze is naturally drawn upward.

After visiting the basilica, the square itself is the logical next stop: a terrace, a glance up at the tower rising above the rooftops, and a moment to let it sink in just how much history converges within these few hundred meters of wall.

This is just a glimpse of what can be found within those town walls; the full walk through Levoča includes more stops, more details, and more places where names and facades reveal something you'd otherwise walk right past.
